Nutritional factors in sport-related concussion

Sports concussion is a major problem that affects thousands of people every year. Concussion-related neurometabolic changes are thought to underlie neurophysiological alterations and post-concussion symptoms, such as headaches sensitivity light noise, disabilities concentration tiredness. The injury triggers complex cascade involving multiple mechanisms. There pharmaceutical treatments target one mechanism, but specific nutrients have been found impact several pathways, thus offering broader approach. This has prompted intensive research into the use nutrient supplements prevention treatment strategy. We realised bibliographic state art providing contemporary clinical preclinical studies dealing with nutritional factors in sport-related concussion. Numerous supplements, including n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, sulfur amino antioxidants minerals, shown promising results aids recovery or animal studies, most which fluid percussion technique cause brain injury, few human severe moderate traumatic injury. Current ongoing trials can hopefully provide us more information, particular, on new options, i.e. probiotics, lactate for concussed athletes. Nutritional supplementation emerged potential strategy prevent and/or reduce deleterious effects sports-related subconcussive impacts.
